PANAMA CITY BEACH, Fl. With the coming of spring usually means more local sports seasons but with the COVID-19 pandemic, a local sports complex had to make some changes.

Officials with the Panama City Beach Sports Complex say all activities including local sports leagues and any upcoming events or tournaments have been postponed until at least May first, which they hope will be enough time to safely reopen but they say they’ll take it day by day.

Michael Booini, the Marketing Manager for the Panama City Beach Sports Complex said, “Things are just changing so quickly it’s difficult to say much more than what we know. Globally this is affecting so many people on such a significant scale. We just want to make sure we do our part and make sure the health and well-being of the community and our team members are the priority here.”

They say due to the events already planned for the summer, the spring leagues will have to be pushed back to the fall.

They say registration fees can either be refunded or put towards the leagues in a few months.

While all events are postponed at the sports complex, officials say it could be viewed as a positive as now they have extra time to fine tweak some things.

"Once we are ready to reopen fully there are definitely things we’ve learned from this. Additional sanitation and signage around the property," said Booini. "Also just make those small improvements, this can be an opportunity to finesse and perfect some things and iron out some creases.”

When the day does come for the sports complex to reopen its doors, officials say they’ll hit the ground running.

“The very purpose of what we do here is to get active, physically, and be outdoors. So this flies in the face of what we’re trying to accomplish here. So we are just as eager as everybody else is to move beyond this," said Booini.
